Surfing in Sri Lanka
One island, two seasons, two coasts. That's the only thing you need to understand, and it's the one no one tells you until you book.
Start readingBy Mathieu, from Sri Lanka
In Sri Lanka, surfing is played on two coasts and two main seasons. From May to September, conditions generally become less favorable in the South and more interesting on the East Coast. Six months later, the logic is reversed. The weather and sea state remain to be checked as the departure approaches.
Concretely: in January, the South is generally the most natural choice; in July, we look more towards the East. The month therefore does not decide if you surf, it directs the coast to choose. In October and November, conditions are more changeable: we check them on a case-by-case basis before planning the stay.
November to April
The south, to learn
This is the coast for beginners and easy holidays. Weligama is probably one of the best places in the world to get up for the first time: sandy bottom, slow waves, and around 20 schools on the beach. We take a foam board and go home happy.
For those who already know, the reefs of Midigama and Ahangama are fifteen minutes away: long lefts and deeper rights, with people in the water in high season but nothing insurmountable if you get up early.
May to September
The east, for the wave
Arugam Bay, and that's about it. A long and regular straight which has made the village's reputation, and a handful of spots around to breathe when the point is busy.
The village lives six months a year and sleeps the rest of the time. In August, it's full of surfers from all over the world; in February, everything is closed. It's not a destination, it's an appointment.
